What's an Interventional Radiologist?
An interventional radiologist is a radiologist with specialized training in the use of image guidance methods to gain access to vessels and organs. They perform minimally invasive procedures to diagnosis and treat conditions throughout the body.
Minimally Invasive Procedures
Essentia's interventional radiologists may perform the following procedures:
- Angioplasty and stenting – Opens narrowed or blocked arteries
- Atherectomy – Removes plaque or a clot from your blood vessels
- Biopsy – Removes tissue samples for examination under a microscope
- Catheter embolization – Blocks blood vessels to control or prevent bleeding, close off blood flow to a tumor, or treat aneurysms
- Central venous catheter (central line) placement – Inserts a long, thin, flexible tube that can be used to give medications, nutrients and other fluids
- Chemoembolization – Delivers chemotherapy directly into a cancerous tumor through a narrow catheter
- Radioembolization – Places tiny beads filled with radioactive material inside the blood vessels that feed a cancerous tumor
- Radiofrequency ablation – Destroys cancerous tissue by thermal heat
- Sympathetic nerve blocks – Relieves chronic pain
- Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty – Treats certain types of spine fractures
