What's a Pediatric Psychiatrist?
A pediatric psychiatrist is a doctor with specialized training in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness and children and adolescents ages five to 18. Pediatric psychiatrists use talk therapy to help children understand their thoughts and behaviors and then can prescribe medication.
When to Seek Support
Talk to your child’s primary care doctor or pediatrician if your child experiences:
- Behavior issues, such as being aggressive or hurting themselves
- Difficulty learning or paying attention
- Extreme sadness, irritability, or other changes in mood
- Delusions, paranoia, or hallucinations
- Social withdrawal
Your child’s primary care doctor may refer you to a psychiatrist if they feel your child need specialized care or may benefit from medication.
Types of Care
Depending on your child’s needs, we may recommend inpatient, outpatient, or emergency mental health services. If you believe your child may harm themselves or others, call 911 for immediate care.

Team-Based Care
Partner with professionals who have the training and experience to help your child learn coping and life skills.
Your child’s care team will be led by a pediatric psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner who will work with your child and family to develop a personalized care plan. Depending on your child’s needs, they may see more than one type of mental health professional including a psychologist or psychotherapist.
Psychologists and psychotherapists can diagnosis and treat mental illnesses and use talk therapy to help children understand their thoughts and behavior patterns. Psychologists and psychotherapists cannot prescribe medications.
