Liz and George Goldfarb: Supporting the Long-term Health and Wellness of the Northland

Vision Northland, the replacement St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, opened on the shores of Lake Superior in 2023. The re-imagined facility features a brand-new hospital tower, state-of-the-art surgical suites, private rooms, and devoted indoor and outdoor healing spaces—transforming the way Essentia Health cares for the Twin Ports community for generations to come.

Liz and George Goldfarb were early supporters of Vision Northland. Having raised their three children in Duluth, they have a great love for the community and are confident in its potential for further growth and economic expansion. George and Liz have made significant philanthropic investments towards the Vision Northland Chapel and Rooftop Garden. They care deeply for the importance of healing spaces within our healthcare community—whether that be for the patients, families, staff, or caregivers.

Recognizing philanthropy goes beyond just donating money, the Goldfarbs have a long history of serving the community. Both graduates of the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD), George and Liz are strong advocates for education, sponsoring ongoing scholarships at UMD and supporting classroom renovation at St Scholastica. In addition, George and Liz have been active with many non-profits—especially those focused on helping children, supporting the less fortunate and freeing others from suffering and adversity – including Woodland Hills, the Boys & Girls Club, the Food Shelf and First Witness Child Advocacy.

In addition to the Goldfarbs’ contributions, their leadership often inspires others. “It is fun to see the snowball effect,” says George. “It can have such a positive and infectious influence on our community. Giving makes people feel good—it strengthens our communities and makes them a better place.”

Following a 36-year career at maurices, the last 10 as President and CEO, George retired in the spring of 2021. Even with a new grandchild, he finds time to remain active and serves on several community Boards, including Essentia Health’s.

Thankful for the quality care their family has always received from Essentia Health, the Goldfarbs are inspired by Essentia’s mission of “being called to make a healthy difference in people’s lives.” They were impressed with Essentia’s quality and commitment during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially its heightened focus around mental health. “Their values of quality, hospitality, respect, joy, justice, stewardship and teamwork are admirable, and make me proud to support and be affiliated with Essentia Health,” shares George.

Recognizing Vision Northland will enhance access to quality, affordable health care, the Goldfarbs encourage others to support the new campus. “It is so much more than a building project—it’s about caring for our neighbors, friends and families, both now and in the future,” says George.

We are grateful for the Goldfarbs’ support and leadership! We invite you to join the Goldfarbs in this historic project impacting our community’s health and economic vitality for generations to come.
