What's a Psychiatrist?
A psychiatrist is a doctor with specialized training in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness. They can prescribe medication and perform medical treatments like electroconvulsive therapy.

Talk to your primary care provider if any of the following affect your daily life:
- Feeling sad, anxious, hopeless, or guilty
- Frequent crying
- Lack of motivation or energy
- Lost off interest or enjoyment in activities or hobbies
- Avoiding spending time with others
- Changes in your eating or sleeping habits
- Difficulty focusing or making decisions
- Compulsive behavior or intrusive thoughts
- Agitation, anger, or paranoia
- Hallucinations
- Thoughts of self-harm or suicide
Your primary care doctor may refer you to our psychiatry team if they feel you need specialized care and may benefit from medication.

Coordinated Care
Your care team will be led by your psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner who will work with you to develop a personalized care plan. Depending on your needs, you may see more than one type of mental health professional.
Your care may include visiting with a psychologist or psychotherapist who has an advanced degree in psychology-the science of mind and behavior. Psychologists can diagnosis and treat mental illnesses and they use talk therapy to help you understand your thoughts and behavior patterns. They are sometimes referred to as therapists and cannot prescribe medications.
