About the Program or PGY2 Oncology Pharmacy Residency
Receive education and training that meets national quality standards. Our Oncology Pharmacy PGY2 Residency program is seeking accreditation by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). The pharmacy residency program is dedicated to providing an experience where all graduates will have completed a variety of clinical, leadership, and educational experiences that will position them to pursue advanced practice in oncology pharmacy.
Pharmacists support a variety of clinical, compounding, administrative, and operational services between the cancer clinic, infusion center, rural outreach locations, and inpatient oncology floor. Pharmacists work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary service model with eight medical oncologists, three pediatric oncologists, and a complement of inpatient and outpatient advanced practice providers, nursing teams, and support staff.
Orientation
Start your pharmacy residency with four weeks of comprehensive orientation, including:
- New hire general orientation
- Electronic health record (EHR) system training
- Education on internal pharmacy processes and decentralized services
- Completion of pharmacist competency modules provided by the Hematology/Oncology Pharmacists Association (HOPA)
Pharmacy Rotations
Build your skills as a practicing oncology pharmacist during rotation assignments that span a variety of departments at Essentia Health and partner facilities.

Longitudinal Rotations
Participate in extended learning experiences throughout your residency year with prolonged rotations in:
- Practice Management and Leadership (49 weeks)
- Research (in coordination with the Essentia Health Institute of Rural Health) (48 weeks)
- Teaching and Precepting (44 weeks)
- Infusion Center Staffing (44 weeks)

Research & Learning Experiences
Take advantage of weekly protected research time to learn evidence-based clinical practices, gain critical skills needed for quality improvement projects, and complete a research project focused on improving patient care, pharmacy services, or quality of clinical practices at Essentia Health.
Develop the skills to provide comprehensive, unbiased, evidence-based medication information as you:
- Participate in a research module—a structured, collaborative opportunity to learn and apply principles of academic and clinical research—through the residency research experience
- Build a drug monograph or drug class review
- Complete a medication-use evaluation (MUE)
- Provide drug therapy information to pharmacy staff and other health care professionals through journal clubs, case presentations, and topic discussions
- Help develop policies to standardize practices and improve medication use safety
- Serve on a variety of pharmacy- and multidisciplinary-committees and steering groups focused on oncology practices
Staffing Opportunities
Apply your pharmaceutical knowledge and clinical skills by practicing as a pharmacist during regular shifts at an Essentia ambulatory infusion center. Starting after the infusion pharmacy rotation, residents can expect:
- One shift per week in the Duluth Clinic’s ambulatory infusion center
- No required holiday or weekend shifts throughout the year
- An incremental level of responsibility and autonomy, allowing you to first develop confidence and then integrate new competencies as you grow your clinical practice skills working with cancer patients
- Direct one-on-one support and mentorship with experienced infusion center pharmacists
